Eastern Sierra Photography Workshop

Fall in the Eastern Sierra Photo Workshop

Fall Color, Mono Lake, Ancient Bristlecones, and Mt. Whitney

October 1 - October 5, 2012

With Mount Whitney and the Alabama Hills, the sawtooth Sierra crest, Mono Lake's tufa towers and pristine reflections, and the gnarled bristlecone pines of the White Mountains, California's Eastern Sierra region is as spectacular as it is diverse—in any season. In fall the Sierra's eastern slopes are blanketed with gold, creating a landscape that borders on visual overload.

Capturing this beauty at its peak requires a thorough knowledge of the region and the intricacies of its light. This workshop will put you in all the best places at the right times. We'll start in Lone Pine, where we'll photograph Mount Whitney at sunset and sunrise. Other highlights include Mono Lake at sunrise and sunset, sunset in the bristlecone pines of the White Mountains, and lots of fall color. And weather permitting, we'll enjoy at least one night photography outing.

The focus in all of my workshops is two-fold: to get you the best possible pictures, and to make you a better photographer. The emphasis is always on getting out in the field and shooting, but I always make time for training, both in the field and in the classroom. Training topics include composition, exposure and metering, and Photoshop and digital workflow. We will also have two image review sessions (always a highlight). In this workshop I'll be assisted by Don Smith.

Schedule

  • Day one: Orientation and photo talk followed by a Mt. Whitney sunset and night shoot in the Alabama Hills

  • Day two: Mt. Whitney sunrise with alpenglow; afternoon and sunset among the ancient bristlecone pines of the White Mountains

  • Day three: Sunrise and fall color at North Lake; fall color in the canyons surrounding Bishop; sunset at Mono Lake

  • Day four: Sunrise at Mono Lake's South Tufa; a day of fall color on the June Lake Loop and in the mountains near Lee Vining, including Lundy Canyon, Tenaya Canyon, Virginia Lakes, and Dunderberg Peak; a drive through Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows with sunset at Olmsted Point (a beautiful, less frequently photographed view of Half Dome)

  • Day five: Sunrise at Mono Lake's northeast shore (a unique and rarely photographed location); more fall color in Lundy Canyon near Lee Vining

Workshop Reviews

You were a master at knowing where we should be and when we should be there in order to get the best light for the photographs... If there is magic in my images, it was thanks to your planning and attention to detail.
