Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake (technically it isn't a lake, but we won't quibble over details here) is directly beneath Half Dome, so close that you need to crane your neck to take in the looming monolith. I enjoy the one mile walk to the lake as much as I enjoy the lake itself. The second half of the route parallels Tenaya Creek, taking you first past a grove of young dogwood, then through a small, dense forest, before the view opens up and trail steepens for the final 1/5 mile. Along this final stretch you'll find lots of nice opportunities to photograph rapids, large boulders, and crashing cascades. The lake and creek dry to sand in late summer and fall, though they fill quickly with a significant rainfall.

You'll definitely need your wide angle at Mirror Lake, though a telephoto is handy along the creek. Once you arrive at the lake, walk around a bit to identify your options. On the east (upstream) side of the lake are good reflections, even when the water in the creek is high and fast. From the shore on the east side you'll find reflections of Half Dome and Mt. Watkins. As with most locations with a view of Half Dome, Mirror Lake is best photographed from late afternoon through sunset.

How to get there

Mirror Lake is a one mile hike from the Horse Stables at the east end of Yosemite Valley. After stable hours you can park in the stables' parking area, but when the stables are open for business, it's best to take the free park shuttle to the Mirror Lake stop and walk the remaining 3/4 miles (despite what the sign says) from there. Many people ride their bikes, and autos with handicapped stickers or plates can drive.
